“From Toxteth to Brick Lane, from Sarcelles to Lisbon, migrants andcultural minorities have participated in the creation of their own urban worlds;their own urbanisms that exist within and are intertwined with the broader contextof society. There is no single experience of city life. Until now these emergenturbanisms — subaltern, underground, excluded — have been largely understood throughthe ideologically loaded prism of the ghetto. This concept has limited ourunderstanding of not only how these spaces are produced but also what they representand signify; in other words, their complexity and diversity. This shift of understandingis not just academic or conceptual. It has major implications for the way thatmigrant, ‘black’ or ‘ghetto’ spaces are mapped and framed in terms of policy andintervention in the ‘real world’.”
